About the Project
Ascension Genesys Health Club in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, is recognized in the Advanced Use of Sensors and Controls for Lighting and Innovative Maintenance, Operation, and Financing Service Models categories. The health club replaced high-intensity discharge (HID) fixtures in their facility with LED luminaires. The lighting is controlled by 20 occupancy sensors, 7 light level sensors for daylight harvesting, and 2 battery-less switches for scheduling. Each fixture was fitted with a wireless mesh control device that allowed for individual addressability, commissioning, and further luminaire level lighting control (LLLC) capabilities.
The project has reported estimated annual energy savings of 1.3 million kWh, resulting in cost savings of over $130,000 per year. Ascension Genesys received an energy rebate and bonus totaling $355,000, which mostly covered contracting costs. The new LED lights last two to three times longer than the HID sources and have a 10-year warranty, which helps Ascension Genesys save on operations and maintenance costs. Ascension Genesys was able to pay off the project in 20 months thanks to saving an estimated $10,000 to $13,000 monthly on energy.
