About the Project
The State of Michigan’s general services building, located in Dimondale, is a secure warehouse used for federal mail reception and delivery, computer/IT deployment, printing, and state police services. In this lighting retrofit project, 900 fluorescent lamps were replaced with 200 LED luminaires with Bluetooth wireless controls. The control systems can be interfaced via mobile phone and offer occupancy, daylight harvesting, and energy monitoring.
The project received a $110,000 rebate from the utility that was entered into the state’s revolving fund to help pay for the next lighting and controls upgrade. It is estimated the new lighting systems will use 70% less energy, saving approximately $77,000 annually.
In addition to working toward the state’s energy efficiency goals, the project has resulted in significant maintenance savings (labor and materials), better facility scheduling and operation, and positive comments from occupants regarding lighting quality and controllability.
