About the Project

A lighting upgrade at Ortega Middle School in Alamosa, Colorado, began as a pilot project of color-tuning fixtures in two classrooms. The teachers in these classrooms loved the ability to adjust the color temperature to enhance the learning environment, and word quickly spread. As the school embarked on a project to replace asbestos ceiling tiles and install new LED fixtures, the positive feedback from the pilot project led them to install tunable lighting in all the classrooms.

The lighting control system allows teachers to select four different color temperatures using wall stations along with static white. It includes hybrid luminaire-level lighting controls and zone controllers, occupancy sensors, daylight harvesting, and task tuning, and allows for remote access and support. Both staff and students have indicated the upgraded lighting has had a positive effect on their experience at school.
